Q. Does DVD X COPY support both NTSC and PAL DVD movies?
A. Yes! NTSC and PAL DVDs are both supported.
Q. Is DVD X Copy compatible with Macintosh?
A. DVD X Copy is not compatible with Macintosh systems at this time. Please check back with them in the future.

A. No! DVD X COPY is a true "One-Click" application developed by our team at 321Studios. There is no freeware or shareware programs included in DVD X COPY.
Q. I tried running word/playing quake/surfing the web while making a back up and everything is running slowly?
A. DVD X COPY is a heavy user of computer resources, we suggest making a nice cup of coffee or tea while making a back up of your favorite DVD.
Q. Can copied DVDs be played on a standard DVD Player?
A. Most DVD R(W) discs will play in your home DVD player. Please check with your Owner's Manual or Manufacturer to see if your player supports DVD recordable discs. To see a list of compatible DVD+R and DVD+RW players, click here.
Q. How many discs are required to burn one DVD?
A. Many DVD movies will fit onto one DVD disk, but on occasion, you will need/want to split the DVD onto two DVD+R disks.
Q. How long does it take to copy a DVD with DVD X COPY?
A. Some newer model computers can copy a DVD movie in one hour or less. Older computers may take a little longer, depending on the speed of their processor and DVD burner.
Q. Will my copy retain the same quality that is on my DVD?
A. Every copy made with DVD X COPY software is EXACTLY like the original. There is no video or audio compression. DVD X COPY is the first program to copy ANY DVD movie without any loss in quality.

Q. Can DVD X Copy be used to copy rented DVDs?
A. You should not use DVD X Copy to copy rented DVDs. DVD X Copy should only be used to make copies of DVDs you own for your personal use. Copyright laws protect the rights of artists and film companies, and 321 Studios asks that you respect those rights.
Q. Is it legal to copy DVDs I own?
A. Yes, you may copy DVDs you own for your personal use. You cannot copy DVDs in order to sell or give away copies, or for any commercial purpose. 321Studios respects the rights of artists and film companies, and the proper use of DVD X Copy does not violate those rights.
Q. Is DVD X Copy illegal?
A. 321Studios respects the rights of artists and film companies, and the proper use of DVD X Copy does not violate those rights. It is legal to make copies of DVDs you own for your personal use. You cannot copy DVDs in order to sell or give away copies, or for any commercial purpose.
Q. Does DVD XCopy work with Superbit DVDs?
A. Yes. We've tested it with Panic Room that uses Superbit technology.
Q. What is Superbit?
A. Video and audio are stored on a DVD using compression algorithims that discard some of the information in the original movie. These compression algorithms are very carefully defined to discard information that is impreceptable to most people. The algorithms can be tuned to trade quality for space. Better compression/smaller files can be created at a slight cost in quality or vice versa.
However most DVD movies don't fill the available space on a dual-layer DVD, so extra features are added (trailers, previews of other movies, "The making ofŠ" videos, director's comments, etc.) The Superbit technology eliminates some of these extra features and simply uses the extra space on the DVD to produce higher quality video and audio. True videophiles can detect the difference.
The only impact Superbit has on DVD XCopy is the files containing the movie tend to be larger than normal and it is less likely that a Superbit movie will fit on a single recordable disk. It will, however, be split just like any other movie that requires more than one disk to archive.
Burning Questions
Q. I installed the software, but the the "combo box" for burning does not list my drive.
A1. Check the above question under "Do you have a DVD writer." Then make sure that you have installed the DVD drivers. The shortcut is located in the DVD X Copy program group on the start menu. Remember, you have to REBOOT after installing the drivers.
A2. Did you REBOOT after installing the drivers?
A3. Has the program stalled? If so, press ctrl+alt+del and use the task manager to look at the status of the program just because the program status is "not responding" doesn't mean that the program is "dead". Don't forget to check for drive lights on the hard drive, and the DVD/ROM.
Q. The program looks like it's ready to burn, but then I get a message saying "Please be advised that there was a problem building the DVD Image for burn there is an excellent chance that this disk will not play correctly. Do you want to continue?"
A. This means that it had a problem understanding this DVD.
If the problem persists please email support@321studios.com:
(1) the Title and edition of the DVD movie; and
(2) the log files. (See "if all else fails", below for how to get the log files.)
Also, try another movie. They're constantly improving DVD X Copy, and what doesn't work well today, might work much better in the future. Also, some DVDs barely meet the minimum requirements to be considered a DVD. These movies are generally more difficult to back up.
Q. I tried burning and I keep getting an error.
A1. Is the Media the correct format for the drive - you can't put a R/W in a +R/W drive and vice versa Š. It just won't work.
A2. Certain drives don't work or "like" certain media manufactures. When it comes to DVDs you normally get what you pay for, maybe a little less.
A3. Is the media damaged in any way
A4. Is there enough free disk space? (we suggest you have about 10gig of free space just to be safe)
A5. Send them the logs (see below for additional details)
A6. Did you select a target DVD Drive in the combo box (click on it it seems that sometimes the default drive doesn't get selected.)
A7. Is the target media formatted/erased?< DVD+RW media needs to be formatted once before use, but never needs to be erased. DVD-RW media doesn't need to be formatted for its first use, but it does need to be erased. DVD X Copy will do its best to detect different media types and states, and react accordingly.
A8. Did you try another source Disk (ie another DVD Movie)?
A9. Did you disable auto play notification for inserted disks (ie sometimes Interactual or another DVD Player will automatically switch on once you insert a movieŠturn this off and then go back to DVD X Copy).
A10. Make sure that the TEMPORARY file path does not have spaces in it. This is a bug that will be fixed in the upcoming patch. One way to avoid this problem, please simply leave the "working space" directory in the default position (ie don't change it).
Copying Questions
Q. I was half way through ripping a disk and I got a "Copy Canceled error."
A1. Copy canceled errors are normally caused by IO problems. Is the disk damaged in anyway? If so, try another DVD Movie.
A2. Did you open the drive, or attempt to "play the DVD movie" while it was being copied? If so, don't and try it again.
A3. Did a "Retry Failed Read" dialog box appear at any time during this backup? If so, the disk might be scratched or unreadable. Try another disk or "retry" and be prepared to wait a long time while it appears to read that section of the disk.
A4. Is there enough free disk space? We recommend at 10 gigs.
Q. DVD X Copy doesn't see my DVD. What's wrong?
A. Try playing the movie in the DVD player on your PC for a brief moment, then exit the software DVD player and start DVD X Copy.
Q. DVD X Copy asks me to insert a disk into the drive, and tells me that locating the disk can take up to a minute -- it's been 5 minutes, what gives?
A. Sometimes autorun and other features can interfere with DVD X Copy's detection of inserted media. If so, exit DVD X Copy and try to read the movie again. Make sure that some other program isn't trying to use the same source/target drive.
Q. I'm running Win2k and I can't backup the Matrix?
A. Right now we can only back up the Matrix under WinXP.
Playing Questions
Q. I can play the DVD on my PC, but it doesn't play in my DVD player?
A. Some DVD Players don't read +R or R media some only read RW or +RW media. Check http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/compatibilitylist_dvdvideo.html for information on which players have a good chance of working with your media.
Q. My movie plays fine up until I hit chapter "X" then it stops / starts playing the movie, etc., what can I do?
A. Make sure that the source disk is in ok condition, and that the target disk is an appropriate media type for your model of DVD burner.
Q. My picture is frozen on my screen, what can I Do?
A. Sometimes the picture will freeze (normally toward the end of disk one or two) Many times, using the fast forward, or the next chapter button will advance you to the next scene you wish to see.
Q. The disk starts in a sub menu when I insert it.
A. Sometimes DVD X Copy gets the "start location" off a little, normally, using the "ROOT MENU" button on your DVD player will return you to the menu and allow you to watch your back up per usual.
Activation Questions
Q. I purchased/downloaded a copy of DVD X Copy, but it will not let me register the product. What should I do?
A1. If you're using internet registration, make sure that your connection is active
A2. If you're behind a personal fire wall, either disable the firewall while you're registering the product, or set the configuration options in the "proxy" section of the Registration dialog.
A3. If registration fails, make a careful note of the message it gives you and email the DVD X Copy tech support team at techsupport@321studios.com or call them at (636) 728-0101.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS ...
If all else fails, there are log files in the installation directory of DVD X Copy (default installation is C:\Program Files\321Studios\ DVDXCopy). Please attach the log files to an email (they are ASCII text files) and send them to techsupport@321studios.com. Also please provide as much relevant information about your computer, burner, DVD you are using, etc.
Q. I don't have any log files where are they?
A. Make sure that the user has "Hide file extension of known files types" set to OFF in their explorer options: There are at least 2 log files: DVDBuild.log, DVDPrep.log. Make sure you send all three files (if you find three there). The files are in the main installation directory of DVDXCopy.
